Sports betting is absolutely legal in Michigan. Michigan lawmakers passed retail sports betting legislation in December 2019 and launched the first online sportsbooks in January 2021.
Michigan does have online sports betting with nine individual sportsbooks being fully operational in the state. Michigan has had online sports betting live since January 2021 and is quickly expanding the amount of sports betting licenses they are handing out. Michigan sports betting is regulated by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
As previously mentioned, Michigan sports betting started at retail locations in December 2019. It quickly spread into the online space just over a year later in January 2021.

Michigan sports betting winners are subject to reporting their winnings over $599 to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The federal tax on winnings can approach as high as 37%, but the Michigan state tax is set at 4.25%.

Sportsbooks request information regarding your birth date when you register and if they eventually ask for proof of documentation, you will have to provide it if you want to continue to use the site or cash out.
