Game details

  • Who: Detroit Tigers vs. Houston Astros
  • When: Sunday, August 27
  • Time: 1:40 p.m. ET
  • Where: Comerica Park (Detroit, MI)

MLB odds:

  • Moneyline: Tigers +150, Astros -180
  • Runline: Tigers +1.5 (-105), Astros -1.5 (-115)
  • Total: Over/Under 8.5 Runs (-120, +100)

Oddsmakers are almost tempting baseball fans to wager on Detroit at home as the dog at +180. That means a winning $100 bet will pay out $180, plus your stake. But, be cautious: the Astros are in a fight for the AL West division, and focused on playing their best baseball down the stretch. It will be Justin Verlander, the former Tiger ace, on the mound for Houston on Sunday afternoon.

Starting pitchers

Alex Faedo (2-4, 4.91 ERA, 45 K in 51.1 IP) vs. Justin Verlander (9-6, 3.19 ERA, 103 K in 118.1 IP)

In his most recent four starts, Faedo has a 2.08 ERA, two quality starts, and two starts where he did not allow an earned run. The young righthander has developed into a dependable starter. But this assignment is bound to come with a dash of nerves, as he faces the future Hall of Famer, and one of his pitching idols. This is the first time Faedo has faced the Astros, and first time toeing the rubber against Justin Verlander.

This is far from the first time Tigers fans have had a chance to witness Verlander in an enemy uniform on the hill back at Comerica Park. But it’s still special to see the man who won a Cy Young, Triple Crown, and Most Valuable Player Award in a Detroit uniform back in the Motor City.

In five career starts against the Tigers, Verlander is only 2-3, but he’s had a 3.18 ERA and an incredible 47 strikeouts in 34 innings. JV’s problem against his former team has been the longball: nine homers in those five starts vs. the Tigers.

Hot hitters and other trends

Since coming back to the Astros at the trade deadline, Verlander has a 22-to-5 K-to-BB ratio… In his last 10 games, Alex Bregman is batting .375 with 9 extra-base hits, three homers, and 11 RBI. He was 3-for-4 with three extra-base hits on Saturday… Jose Altuve is heating up: he has hits in seven of his last nine games, with two on Saturday… Kerry Carpenter has a seven-game hitting streak, in which he’s blasted four home runs and driven in 11… The Detroit bullpen has a sickly 6.18 ERA in its last nine games.

Tigers bet of the day

Justin Verlander To Record a Win (+130)

We also like the OVER on 6.5 strikeouts by Verlander (+100), and even OVER 18.5 outs recorded (+120). But we’ll lean into the +130 odds on JV getting 254th career victory.

Same-game parlay

We have a four-leg parlay at +2579 odds, built in the DraftKings Sportsbook app. This parlay is for the Sunday game between the Tigers and Astros, and if it hits, a $100 bet would win you $2,579. Or even bet $20 and win $257.90.

  • Justin Verlander to Record OVER 6.5 Strikeouts
  • Yordan Alvarez to Record OVER 0.5 RBI
  • Jose Altuve To Record 1+ Hits
  • Riley Greene First PA Result, In Play Out
