BYRON TOWNSHIP, MI — Just down the road from the Trinity Health Medical Center on 64th Street, another large-scale building is in the works.

Like the medical center, this also is focused on health services.

The site currently features heavy construction equipment as work continues on the new facility.

The new building, located at 6291 Venture Hills Blvd. not far off M-6 in Kent County, will be a two-story hospital with room for 96 beds. The 8.34-acre site has room for an expansion, adding another 144 beds to the hospital at a later date.

The 73,362-square-foot hospital, called Southridge Behavioral Hospital, is expected to open in 2025. The $46 million psychiatric hospital is a partnership between Trinity Health and Universal Health Services.

The hospital will employ 170 full- and part-time medical staff, treating individuals with depression, anxiety, grief, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other ailments. Medical staff will also provide counseling services and medication management.

The first floor of the hospital will be a little over 52,000 square feet, while the second floor is 21,000 square feet. A site plan for the building approved by the Byron Township Planning Commission shows the hospital will include patient rooms, consultation rooms, a gymnasium, laundry, a kitchen and dining room, activity rooms, group therapy rooms, nurse stations on every floor, a pharmacy and several types of workrooms. There will also be an outdoor activity yard and a loading dock.

Planning for the hospital began in 2021 and a groundbreaking took place earlier this summer. The hospital will be able to provide both inpatient and outpatient care in the facility furnished with serene décor. On average, inpatient stays are expected to last about a week.

There will be a variety of group counseling and therapies, including art and music therapy, at Southridge Behavioral Hospital.

In the hospital, just under 13,000 square feet of space is dedicated to patient bedrooms. Another 8,831 square feet is set aside for clinical support and 6,368 square feet is for patient activities. There is 6,400 square feet of administrative space and food service takes up just over 4,300 square feet. A 170-space parking lot will serve the first phase of construction, with the 96 hospital beds.

The 96 beds can treat 72 adults and 24 geriatric patients. Those who need to be hospitalized because they are a danger to themselves or others can also be treated at Southridge Behavioral Hospital.
