GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The community turned out Saturday for Grand Rapids Public Schools first varsity football game of the season, featuring the district’s Ottawa Hills Bengals and Union Red Hawks at Houseman Field.
The Red Hawks would dominate the entire game Saturday, Aug. 26, jumping out to an early lead with three touchdowns in the first quarter. Jesse Phillips, a sophomore running back, scored multiple touchdowns as Ottawa Hills struggled throughout the game, losing 60-16.

This was the district’s 2nd Annual Alumni Classic Varsity Football game. Graduates from 1942 to 2023 were invited to come to Houseman Field, 162 Houseman Ave. NE. This year’s theme was “A Celebration of the Grand Rapids City League.” The league, comprised of eight schools, existed for 99 years.
