Paul Goydos and Darren Clark won the war of attrition Saturday, putting the two PGA Tour Champions veterans in position for the Ally Challenge title Sunday.
After weather postponed the Friday’s first round at Grand Blanc’s Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club, golfers played two rounds Saturday, starting the first round at 7:15 a.m. and the second at 12:30 p.m.
Goydos and Clark were one shot back of first-round leaders Jeff Maggert, Vijay Sing and Paul Sankowski, who shot 66s to start the tournament.
But Goydos and Clarke both carded 66s in the second round for a two-round score of 11-under 133 to sit in front of a group at 134 that includes Harrison Frazar, Maggert, Singh and Stephen Ames. Bernhard Langer sits at 8-under 137.
Goydos has five wins on the PGA Tour Champions tour in 204 starts, with a pair of Top 10 finishes this season. The 11-under 133 is his lowest 36-hole score since the 2018 Charles Schwab Cup Championship. Goydos gained momentum on the front nine in the second round, birdying five of the nine holes.
Clarke has four wins on the PGA Tour in 98 starts. In 16 starts this season, Clarke has six Top 10 finishes. After five birdies and no bogeys in the first round, Clarke birdied seven holes in the second round including four on the back nine.
Defending champion and Schwab Cup leader Steve Stricker sits in 12th place after a 2-under 70 in the first round and 4-under 68 in the second round.
The Golf Channel will carry Sunday’s final round from 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. Golfers are expected to tee off at 9:15 a.m. Sunday. Goydos, Clarke and Frazar will tee off in the last group at 11:15 a.m.
