JACKSON, MI – Flavorz is cooking unique, comfort food in the back of a Jackson convenience store.

Rae Klavon has been running Flavorz inside Home Town Convenience since 2022, after her cousin told her to check out the space for its kitchen. The store owners told her they liked her concept and welcomed her, she said.

Flavorz tries to stand out from other restaurants, and offers different foods Jackson does not have, Klavon said.

“We try to get creative with everything we do,” Klavon said. “I don’t want it to be normal, I want them to remember it.”

One of these unique dishes is their Deep Fried Philly Cheesesteak, which comes with shaved ribeye, onions, green peppers, mushrooms and American cheese, all deep fried in pastry. Klavon came up with the idea after she came home from a trip to Chicago and tried to recreate a recipe she saw there.

“We’ve finally mastered it,” Klavon said. “Most people will think it’s like an eggroll, but it’s more like a croissant.”

The devilled eggs are also a big seller, especially the Fried Chicken Devilled Eggs, which are traditional deviled eggs topped with a piece of fried chicken, then drizzled with hot honey.

Loaded fries, sandwiches and gyros are also big sellers. Grab-and-go salads are also available inside the convenience store, Klavon said.

Aside from the food, Klavon, who’s related to Justin Klavon, owner of Klavon’s Pizzeria & Pub, said she values family in her business, especially since she works with her 15-year-old son Stephen Fair.

Flavorz has shortened some of its hours during the warmer months to allow her employees to spend time with their families, Klavon said.

“Sometimes I missed a lot of things with my kids growing up because I had to work holidays or long hours,” she said. “I kind of tried to make sure that’s not a thing here. I think about family more than money.”

Flavorz, located inside Home Town Convenience,1033 Cooper St., is open f11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Winter hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
