Michigan’s Best Local Eats: Try some old-fashioned doughnuts from this Concord food truck

CONCORD, MI – If you’re looking for some old-fashioned doughnuts, a food truck based out of Concord has just that.

Dirt Road Donuts was crafted by neighbors Brianne Sinden and Emily Weeks in 2022 after they wanted to create a summer job to teach their children entrepreneurship and life skills.

Weeks’ grandmother used to make traditional doughnuts unlike the cake or pastry doughnuts people see today, inspiring her to serve them out of the truck as Dirt Road Donuts, she said.

“I wanted the old-fashioned doughnuts where they’re crispy on the outside and soft on the inside,” Weeks said.

The doughnuts are sour-cream based, which makes them standout from some others served in the Jackson County-area. Unlike typical cake doughnuts, where the texture stays consistent all the way through, these doughnuts stay moist on the inside, she said.

Dirt Road Donuts also only serves doughnut holes, catering to those who don’t want to commit to a whole doughnut, they said. People can choose a range of sizes, from three pieces to a dozen, and customize toppings to their liking.

Customers also can opt for their doughnuts to be topped with either cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar or served plain. Chocolate, maple caramel or a raspberry drizzle flavors also are available, while sprinkles and bacon can also be added.

The most popular combinations are powdered sugar doughnuts with a raspberry drizzle, or cinnamon sugar doughnuts with maple caramel and bacon on top, Sinden said.

“That’s a new hit this summer,” Weeks said.

Aside from the doughnuts, people also can purchase apple cider slushies, edible cookie dough and occasionally coffee from Trail Head Coffee in Concord. The slushies are a big hit since they use real apple cider, the duo said.

While Weeks and Sinden are owners of the business, their children, who are ages 11 to 20 years old, operate Dirt Road Donuts. While they may fight over the hours, the crew of Iyla, Georgia and Billie Weeks and Macy, Rylee and Ty Sinden love working together and get along well, Weeks and Sinden said.

“We get tremendous feedback on how people love it that our kids are working the truck, and they’re always so polite and so happy to see customers,” Sinden said.

While they enjoy being able to serve up great eats, they also love creating an experience. Whenever they set up at an event, they tend to roll out a carpet and set up some chairs and tables.

Locations, schedules and updates on where to find the food truck can be found on Dirt Road Donuts’ Facebook page and Instagram.

They also will be at the Jackson County Fair, which will end Saturday, Aug. 12 at the Jackson County Fairgrounds/Keeley Park, 200 W. Ganson St. They are just one of many local food vendors in attendance.
