JACKSON, MI – Sticky burgers have been increasing in popularity over the years, and Jackson’s Greystone Tavern has created its own version of the gooey hamburger featuring peanut butter.

Greystone Tavern offers the Fried Pickle and Peanut Butter Burger as an occasional special. The burger was crafted by chef and manager Tiffany Newman, who said she wanted to bring a taste of nostalgia to the business.

Growing up, Newman’s family would make peanut butter and pickle sandwiches, and she thought maybe others would enjoy trying this combination, too -- on a burger.

“We just were trying to come up with some new stuff for the (K105.3 Best Burger) contest,” Newman started. “And it was —”

“— Something from your childhood,” co-owner Robert Dunham finished.

The Fried Pickle and Peanut Butter Burger starts with a beef patty, cheese, bacon and peanut butter. Then fried pickles are added, which helps give the sandwich a sweet and savory taste, Newman said.

When customers first hear of the burger, they usually have mixed reactions, with some debating on whether or not they would try it, Newman said. But when they finally do, they usually enjoy it, she said.

“I think everybody’s always happy with the food and the service here,” Newman said.

The burger is sold for $12.95 when Greystone Tavern has burger specials, usually on Wednesdays.

The Fried Pickle and Peanut Butter Burger, however, isn’t the only burger turning heads at Greystone Tavern. It also has a burger served on a glazed Hinkley’s doughnut and another served between two crispy chicken tenders.

The bar and restaurant, owned by Dunham and his sister Brenda Rilett, always looks for ways to separate itself from others, Dunham said.

“Everybody does a cheeseburger,” he said.

Greystone also offers the Rodeo Burger, which is onion rings, cheese, barbecue sauce and bacon, all shoved between two pieces of garlic toast. The Tavern Burger is also a fan favorite and comes with grilled onions, mushrooms, cheese and bacon.

Greystone Tavern, 1008 Lansing Ave., in Jackson, is open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
