GRASS LAKE, MI – Sawd’s Village Inn is full of history for owner Missy Shelhart, and she passes it on to the public through big portions.
Shelhart opened the restaurant in March 2022. Her uncle, Duane Sawdy, used to own the eatery 40 years ago, and she worked her first job there. To honor her uncle, she said she decided to add his name to the business again.
“Everybody knew this as the Village Inn, so I named it after him,” Shelhart said.
People can find a range of breakfast, lunch and dinner items on Sawd’s Village Inn’s menu. Popular items are wraps, sandwiches, the salad bar and daily specials.
The restaurant is western themed, so menu items have western-inspired names. Popular daily specials include the Mexican menu items on Thursday, which features the chicken fajita chimichanga, which is served with chicken, peppers and onion inside a deep-fried tortilla. The outside is topped with queso, tomato and lettuce.
People also like the large burgers. One of the best sellers is the Big Sky Burger, which comes with two patties, bacon, lettuce, fried egg and tomato on sourdough bread.
People can also find a fish fry on Friday and prime rib on Saturday.
The great flavors and big portion sizes keep people coming back, Shelhart said.
Shelhart also owns Missy’s Little Grass Shack, located down the road at 100 E. Michigan Ave.
Sawd’s Village Inn, 12000 E. Michigan Ave. in Grass Lake is currently open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. The restaurant will be closed from July 23 to Aug. 3.
After Aug. 8, the restaurant’s hours also are changing to 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.
