JACKSON COUNTY, MI – KeniKakes & More strives to make its kitchen like the one in your home, so its daily menu is always changing.
The restaurant, owned by Shakanna Blake, moved into a brick-and-mortar location in February. Since then, Blake has been busy getting to know the Vandercook Lake community and putting together some new items for people to try, she said.

“(We) just like to bring some different stuff to the community; things they are not going to get at a chain restaurant,” Blake said.
Each day, Blake serves a range of regular items, such as a pulled pork macaroni and cheese, sloppy Joes, sweets and other home-cooked meals.
She mixes that up with different daily specials, including a handful of salad options she calls a “Salad Extravaganza.”
“I just figured it’s summertime, it’s hot, so let’s hit them with some salads,” Blake said.
One of the newest items is a chicken and shrimp salad that comes with lettuce, tomato, cheese, peppers, cucumbers, eggs, carrots, tortilla strips and is served with ranch dressing.
Another salad is the blackened catfish salad, which comes with the same items served on the chicken and shrimp salad, except it has catfish.
“It’s been going really well,” Blake said. “Everyone is coming in to get salads.”
Other daily specials are chicken alfredo and barbecue pork chops. Specials are announced throughout the week on KeniKakes & More’s Facebook page.
KeniKakes & More also offers catering. Blake has been expanding on this as well, with the most popular request being a grazing table, she said.
“(It’s) just like an expanded charcuterie board, and it has everything from sandwiches, cheese, crackers, fruit and vegetables,” Blake said.
KeniKakes & More, 107 Hague Ave. at Vandercook Lake, is drive thru-only and is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, unless it is catering an event.
