The Tigers’ opportunity to clinch the set on Saturday withered away into the night. Though the game was tied at one heading into the fifth inning, the Astros blew the game open with five runs over the following two frames, and cruised to a 9-2 victory, ending their three-game losing streak.
Detroit had plenty of missed opportunities in the contest, leaving eight runners stranded. Parker Meadows had another solid game at the dish, as he and Kerry Carpenter each had two hits. With a 12-11 record in the month of August, the Bengals are still third in the American League Central, still 7.5 games back of the first-place Minnesota Twins.
Alex Bregman led the charge for Houston on Saturday night, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a two-run home run in the fifth. Despite the win, the ‘Stros are still third in the AL West, a game back of the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners. They still hold the third and final Wild Card spot, 1.5 games ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays.
If they can pull it together against their former ace, Justin Verlander, the Tigers can still secure a second series win in a week’s span with a victory on Sunday.
PROBABLE STARTERS
