The National Weather Service is warning those who expect to go out on Lake Michigan Saturday to use caution in some areas and not to swim in others as dangerous waves are expected. With wind speeds anticipated to hit 15-to-20 miles per hour and waves that could build to 3-to-5 feet, officials say it might not be safe to be in large portions of the lake.
The waves are expected to be at their largest in the afternoon and evening making them extremely dangerous to navigate along with the dangerous current. The “do not swim” warning is particularly important on beaches that stretch from Pentwater to Manistee as well as those that stretch from St. Joseph to South Haven.
The north sides of the piers are expected to be especially dangerous as the winds pick up and the waves roll in.
