ANN ARBOR, MI -- People feel the tinge of excitement in knowing they’ll soon get a bite of fresh-baked bread as soon as the smell hit their noses.

Bread lovers looking for the perfect spot to get that fresh loaf can find it in the Ann Arbor-area, whether they’re looking for classic options or something a little different.

Here are five great places to get fresh-baked bread around Ann Arbor.

Bird Dog Baking

Bird Dog Baking in Ypsilanti focuses on creating sourdough breads and grain-forward pastries.

Customers can find baguettes, seeded dark rye, toasted sesame, whole grain, Michigan cherry and maple and the Ypsi Sour. Bird Dog Baking’s products can be found in a variety of places around Ann Arbor including Argus Farm Stop, Green Things Farm Stand and Cahoots Café.

Bird Dog Baking also does online orders where customers can select a day to pick up their products from its bakery at 100 W. Michigan Ave. in Ypsilanti.

Yoon’s Bakery

Yoon’s Bakery, 2775 Plymouth Road, brings Korean-style baking to the Ann Arbor-area.

The bakery is known for both its sweet and savory breads made fresh every day. Options include red bean bread, sweet potato bread, cinnamon nut bread, cream cheese garlic bread and hazelnut cream bread. Yoon’s also bakes its own cakes, tarts and scones.

Zingerman’s Bakehouse, 3711 Plaza Drive, is a full-service bakery offering pastries, cookies, brownies, coffee cakes, desserts, cakes and plenty of bread.

Customers can find “bake house classics” like fresh white bread, challah, chile cheddar bread, chocolate cherry bread, pumpernickel, French baguettes, farm bread and cinnamon raisin bread, along with other baked goods like bagels, pretzels and rolls.

White Lotus Farms

White Lotus Farms, 7217 W. Liberty Road, offers five grain bread, bacon levain, country levain, olive levain, baguettes and cran walnut bread, as well as croissants which come in a variety of flavors like pistachio cream with blackberry jam, ham and brie and chocolate.

The farm ensures all its breads “are naturally leavened and made using organic, locally sourced grain that’s milled fresh,” from its property, according to its website.

White Lotus Farms’ farm market is open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. Customers also can place orders online anytime during the week with select pickup options on Wednesday or Saturday.

Avalon Café and Kitchen

Avalon International Breads launched in 1997 in Detroit and expanded its efforts to Ann Arbor in 2016 with Avalon Café and Kitchen, 120 E. Liberty St.

The café is a place in Washtenaw County where people can get bread made by Avalon International Breads. It carries options like sourdough and multigrain bread and also uses Avalon bread for all of its dishes.

General Manager Joanne Bower said the space also offers breads from Rich Grains Bakery in Milan, including its nine grain oat honey bread, sourdough bread and some of its seasonal breads, which have included jalapeno cheddar bread in the past.

Avalon Café and Kitchen is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. everyday, as well as 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Learn more about it online.
