WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI -- People who love Mexican food know how important it can be to find a go-to restaurant that has quality and freshness.

Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti seem to have plenty of Mexican restaurants to choose from whether someone is looking for a spot to scarf down tacos, burritos, nachos and quesadillas or try something new.

Here’s a look at five different Mexican restaurants in the Ann Arbor area.

Chela’s Restaurant & Taqueria

The restaurant also has another location in Dexter at 7065 Dexter Ann Arbor Road that is open from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

MAIZ Mexican Cantina

MAIZ Mexican Cantina, 36 E. Cross St. in Ypsilnti, offers customers salads, tacos, enchiladas, specialty burritos, quesadillas, fajitas and some other Mexican favorites like chimichangas, flautas and Chile rellenos which are stuffed poblano peppers.

Some of MAIZ’s taco selections include carnitas tacos, spicy chicken fresco tacos, fish tacos and carne asada tacos, along with meatless options like fried cauliflower and fried avocado tacos. The restaurant also has burritos, including California club, ultimate veggie, spicy steak fajita and big Barbacoa.

MAIZ prepares menu items from scratch every day and brings a “fresh approach to traditional favorites and Tex-Mex specialties,” according to its website.

MAIZ Mexican Cantina is open noon to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

Miny’s Mexican Restaurant

Miny’s Mexican Restaurant, 2866 Washtenaw Ave. in Ypsilanti Township, serves burritos, quesadillas, tortas, tostadas, nachos, fajitas and a variety of specialty tacos filled with fish, shrimp, veggies, barbacoa and other meats.

Miny’s menu also features other popular Mexican dishes like huaraches, gorditas and pambazos, as well as dessert options like Tres Leches cake, fried Oreos and churros.

Chapala Mexican Restaurant

Chapala Mexican Restaurant “brings the flavor of Mexico to Ann Arbor,” according to its website.

The downtown Mexican restaurant at 211 N. Main St. brings a menu packed with enchiladas, fajitas, burritos, quesadillas and nachos. The restaurant even features a dish called Tater Tachos which are Tater Tots topped with queso, pico, guacamole, sour cream and a fried egg.

The restaurant also offers some kid-friendly and vegetarian options, along with different types of margaritas, specialty cocktails, beer and wine.

Isalita Cantina Mexicana

Isalita Cantina Mexicana’s menu is “influenced by the street food found in the open air markets frequented in Mexico City,” according to its website.

Customers can find starters like Mexico City ribs, shrimp ceviche and forest mushroom empanadas along with other dishes like tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, salads and soup.

The restaurant also offers a variety of cocktails, beer, wine and margaritas that customers can even try with house infused tequila. Plenty of tequila options are on the menu and customers can try them with a tasting flight.
